March 22, 1933 ~ May 20, 2024
Bill Marcovecchio, retired vegetable farmer and businessman, was born in Murray, Utah on March 22, 1933 and passed away at home on May 20, 2024, after a courageous battle with a terminal illness. His unwavering Catholic faith remained a central part of his life until the very end.
Born third to Joe and Sarah (Falsone), he soon joined the family farm alongside his brother Joe (Patricia) and sister Rosemary (Carl Vaccaro) and is preceded in death by his parents and brother.
Bill’s marriage to Carolyn was a beacon of enduring love, a partnership that flourished through seven decades of shared dreams and challenges. Their children Michael, Marie (Joseph) and Paula (Peyton), along with their many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, were the fruits of this lifelong union.
Bill’s life was a testament to hard work, resilience and love for his family. As he grew, so did his passion for farming. The vast expanse of land he and his siblings and family cultivated, at times neared 400 acres and included romaine, red and green leaf, sweet corn, cabbage, cauliflower, onions and pumpkins on Greenbriar Farms (Draper).
He served in many positions on the board for the East Jordan Irrigation Company for over 60 years. Bill’s appointment to the Board of Water Resources under Governor Levitt showcased his commitment to public service. From May 1997 to March 2005, he championed water rights, improvements, conservation and equitable distribution throughout Utah.
Bill actively contributed to his church community. He served as a sacristan, ensuring the smooth functioning of religious ceremonies. His involvement extended to the parish council, where he participated in decision-making and community-building efforts.
One of Bill’s enduring legacies was his vision for the Skaggs Catholic Center. He saw it not only as a physical space but as a celebration of beauty and Christ. Importantly, he also prioritized the safety of children and pedestrians on campus, emphasizing intentional measures to protect them.
He served stateside as an agriculture inspector in the United States Army during the Korean conflict and was honorably discharged. His legacy will continue through the memories shared by family, friends, his parish and the community.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at noon on June 13, 2024 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 300 East 11800 South, Draper. Family and friends are invited to call at 10:30 a.m. Rosary service begins at 11:30 a.m. The Rite of Committal follows at Larkin Sunset Gardens, 1950 East 10600 South, Sandy.
Memorial donations may be made to Catholic Community Services and St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in honor of Bill Marcovecchio.
