SANDY - Blessed Sacrament School students helped those in need at the Road Home this year by collecting items for Candy Cane Corner.
For Candy Cane Corner, Megan Tigue, Blessed Sacrament School Student Council president, said each classroom was handed out a box for students to fill until Dec. 14. The students brought in new hats, gloves, coats, sweatshirts or other clothes for parents and children, as well as baby supplies, toiletries, kitchen supplies, toys and books.
"Students delivered the supplies to the Road Home, where Candy Cane Corner is located, on Dec. 17," Tigue said. Blessed Sacrament has helped people at the Road Home for many years. "Last year we helped provide Christmas for the program, which helped over 1,200 people," said Tigue.
"This year sixth, seventh, and eighth grade student council members each were assigned to a classroom to talk about Candy Cane Corner," said Tigue. "The classrooms were told this project would help a lot of people and they were given a list of what they could bring," she said.
"There is a wrapping station at Candy Cane Corner where parents can wrap the gifts they choose for their family members, so we also have been collecting wrapping paper," said Sonia West, Blessed Sacrament advancement director.
"We rented a bus to deliver all of the clothes and supplies to the Road Home," said Tigue. "We were able to tour the Road Home after delivering what we had been collecting.
"I will be getting confirmed this spring, and have been earning service hours by volunteering at the Soup Kitchen, and I have seen a lot of homeless people," said Tigue. "And Christmas means a lot to me. So doing this project is a way for us to allow these people to feel the spirit of Christmas as well. I enjoy hearing the story of the birth of Jesus and feeling the spirit of Christmas in the air. I want the homeless to feel it, too."
