Catholic high schools wrap up fall sport season

SALT LAKE CITY – Juan Diego Catholic High School had an outstanding fall sports season, with state championships in football (see story, below), golf (see story p. 8) and girls’ soccer, while Judge Memorial CHS qualified at the state level in girls’ tennis and boys’ golf. In addition, Saint Joseph CHS teams advanced to the state tournaments in baseball, volleyball and soccer, while in cross country, senior Meghann Clare placed 5th overall. Several members of the Jayhawks girls tennis team competed in the state finals as well.
Juan Diego Catholic High School: The Juan Diego Catholic High School girls’ soccer team triumphed this year in the 2016 3A UHSAA Girls Soccer Championships, taking home the trophy on Oct. 22. The final was held at Rio Tinto Stadium, where JDCHS defeated Logan High School 3-0.
Several students from the JDCHS girls’ tennis team advanced to the 2016 3A UHSAA Girls Tennis Championships. Lauren and Reagan Sorge, both juniors, qualified for the first and second singles tournament, respectively, while Sami Howa, a junior, qualified for the third singles brackets. Senior Taylor Uno and junior BreeAnn Mason played in the first round of the first doubles bracket. Finally, Georgi Alley, a junior, and Britni Walker, a senior, represented JDCHS in the second doubles tournament.
Judge Memorial Catholic High School: JMCHS saw many girls qualify for the 2016 4A UHSAA Girls Tennis Championships. Katherine MacPhail, a sophomore, advanced to the second round of the first singles. Emily Rougelot, a junior, qualified for the second singles tournament. Jessica Jenny, a senior, made it into the first round of the second singles tournament. Ellie McCoy, a junior, and Olivia Anderson, a senior, qualified for the first doubles bracket. Chloe Lloyd, a junior, and Anna Drossos, a sophomore, played in the first round of the second doubles bracket for JMCHS.
Tracey Valentine, head coach for the JMCHS girls’ tennis team, said she was happy with the outcome of the championship. “We focused on having the girls be the best they can,” she said. “By the time we got to state, we went in with nothing to lose.”
In golf, Bulldog Carter Holyoak placed 38 overall in the 2016 4A Boys Golf High School State Championships.
St. Joseph Catholic High School: Meghann Clare, a senior at SJCHS and a member of the cross country team, placed 5th overall in the 1A Girl’s 3 Mile tournament of the 2016 USHAA Cross Country State Championships.
The SJCHS baseball team qualified for the quarterfinals in the 2016 1A UHSAA State Baseball Championship. “This year made the boys a little more hungry, made them see that they weren’t an invincible team,” said Steve Mendez, head coach. “I had fun with it every day.”
The girls’ soccer team also qualified for state, playing in the first round of the 2016 2A Girls Soccer Championship.
Multiple members of the Jayhawks team made it to the 2016 2A Girls Tennis Championship. Anna Yarema, a junior, placed into the quarterfinals of the first singles bracket. Abby Franci and Brianna Palmer, a freshman and senior respectively, played together in the quarterfinals of the first doubles bracket as well.
The SJCHS volleyball team qualified for the 2016 1A State Volleyball Tournament, reaching the quarterfinals with a victory over Piute High School, but then lost to Rich High School.
