SALT LAKE CITY — July 24 marks the official state of Utah holiday that commemorates the day in 1847 when Brigham Young and the first group of pioneers from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints entered the Salt Lake Valley.
All around Utah parades, festivals, reenactments and fireworks will celebrate what is known as “Pioneer Day.”
Some years ago “Pie and Beer” parties started emerging as an alternative to the celebration.
“Pie and Beer” is a play on words; the phrase sounds similar to “pioneer,” and many of the parties serve pie and beer.
“It’s as simple as ‘gather friends and family, bring pie and beer, have fun and eat.’ It’s been this way for years and it’s a formula that has proven to work,” said Mike Hansen, a parishioner of St. Catherine of Siena Newman Center, which for several years has hosted just such a celebration and plans one for this year on July 25.
Meanwhile, The Madeleine Choir School will host its 2nd annual Pie and Beer Day on July 24, and St. John the Baptist Parish’s Knights of Columbus will have a Pie-N-Beer Day that day as well.
