OGDEN — Catholic Community Services of Northern Utah’s Dream Builders Breakfast this year will take place on June 2 at the Ogden Eccles Conference Center.
The breakfast, the primary fundraiser for CCS Northern Utah, celebrates those in the community who work diligently to fight hunger in the Ogden area, according to the organization.
This year’s honorees include Annette DeFries, who will be receiving the Community Advocate Award. David Donahoe will be presented with the Lifetime of Service Award. The Community Partner Award will be given to Wasatch Peaks Credit Union, and the MarketStar Cares Foundation has been named the recipient of the 2025 Humanitarian Award.
DeFries “is just an overall amazing lady; she has been an advocate of CCS for years, and what doesn’t she do?” said Maresha Bosgieter, CCS’s development director.
DeFries volunteers every week to assemble layettes for St. Martha’s Baby Project, and “Annette and her husband were also the team leaders for the Light the World Giving Machines in Ogden this past holiday season, which was sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and raised over $75,000 to help feed those in our community who are struggling,” Bosgieter said.
Donahoe, a parishioner of Holy Family Parish in Ogden and member of Knights of Columbus Council 14399, “has been instrumental in coordinating their involvement in things like our Backpack Bonanza, food drives and more,” Bosgieter said.
Donahoe also organized the Knights of Columbus Coats for Kids drive, which benefited CCS clients. In addition, “he has been a backbone volunteer at Bridging the Gap since 2018, and we wouldn’t be able to get it done each week without him,” Bosgieter said.
Wasatch Peaks Credit Union has been partnering with CCS for many years.
“They served on our Backpack Bonanza committee when we were building it up and gave great input, along with spreading the word and collecting donations, and always bring a team to volunteer in the pantry during our holiday food distributions, ensuring everyone can celebrate with a meal at home,” Bosgieter said.
The MarketStar Cares Foundation “has always been involved in the community,” Bosgieter said. “Over the years they have assisted with food drives, and are a key partner with the school districts in addressing the issue of hunger and other student needs.”
Recently the MarketStar Cares Foundation organized a day of giving where “they purchased all the items and sent over 60 employees to assemble over 12,000 Pantry Packs to help feed kids over the weekend,” Bosgieter said. “They make a huge difference in our ability to meet the needs in our community.”
At the Dream Builders Breakfast, “the spirit at the event, and all the wonderful faces who support our mission throughout the year, just feels different than at anything else we do,” Bosgieter said, adding that the event “is a chance for everyone to celebrate their contributions and the impact they help us make.”
With the numerous challenges that the world and specifically CCS has been facing in the past few months, having people step up and support community members who are most in need is important because “public policy and viewpoints seem to change every year based on things that are going on in the world, and sometimes it’s easy to forget about the things that go on right here in our local community,” Bosgieter said. “This is a great opportunity to refocus on our neighbors who need help, and what we can do to support them.”
