Over the past few years, the property around Saint Patrick Catholic Church in Eureka has become overgrown and littered with debris and used appliances from construction. The building, one of the oldest Catholic churches in Utah, was founded in 1885. Since the mining boom during the late 1800s and the early 1900s, the population of the town of Eureka has declined rapidly, but the church remains the local parish for a number of Catholic families in the area. On Oct. 5, members of St. Patrick Parish, along with Fr. Alfredo Valdez-Molina, administrator of San Andres Parish in Payson, and more than 30 San Andres parishioners came together in faith and charity to clean up the St. Patrick Parish property. Following the cleanup, the Payson Knights of Columbus Council 9561 hosted a lunch with desserts provided by the ladies. One hope for the gathering was that it will strengthen the ties between the St. Patrick and San Andres church communities.
