SALT LAKE CITY — Most Utah Catholics age 70 and older are eligible to receive COVID-19 vaccines. Doing so helps ensure their safety as well as that of others; once they are completely immunized they may able to return to full worship at their parishes.
“Receiving the COVID-19 vaccine is an expression of our commitment to love our neighbor as our self,” Bishop Oscar A. Solis said in a December 2020 statement. “With rising deaths across Utah, being vaccinated is our best opportunity to protect the sanctity of life in our community and is part of our moral responsibility toward one another.”
The vaccines are being administered through local health departments. While procedures vary, most health departments have online systems where an individual can sign up for an appointment on a first-come, first-served basis. However, supply is very limited and several attempts may be required to get an appointment, particularly in the more populous counties, officials warn. Full protection from COVID-19 requires two doses; instruction on signing up for the second dose will be given at the first appointment. All immunizations are being provided free of charge.
Links to all local health departments are available at coronavirus.utah.gov. For seniors who do not have a computer or smart phone, or are uncomfortable with technology, the Utah Department of Health hotline team can enroll them for available appointments in their area; call 1-800-456-7707.
