SALT LAKE CITY - What to do when you have outstanding students who are recognized statewide and nationally?.

That was the scenario at J.E. Cosgriff Memorial School, which celebrated its numerous awards with an Honor and Achievement Assembly before the end of the school year.

This year, 24 percent of the 195 Cosgriff students earned the Presidential Fitness Award, a 4 percent increase over last year.

The Champions Across America Award from the Boy Scouts of America went to Tommy Walz, along with a check of $200.

Mikaela Schmiett was awarded first place in the state for the Utah League of Cities and Towns "Why I Like My Community" essay contest, 7th grade division. She received a $200 award; the school also received a donation of $1,000.

"This is the second year in a row that a Cosgriff student has won this award," said Principal Betsy Hunt. The award was presented by Jill Remington Love.

Johnny Walz was awarded first place in the Igniting Creative Energy essay contest, a national student challenge to motivate learning, ignite the imagination and fuel the creative potential in youth. Walz, a third-grade student, designed and created a game to conserve energy in the home. Walz won first place in the statewide competition for his unique ideas of ways to save energy; he was awarded a solar backpack that can charge most personal electronic devices, like iPods. He and his friends were also treated to a pizza party courtesy of Johnson Controls and the National Energy Foundation.

The Light of Christ Religious Emblem was awarded to Greer Bleyl and Jack Shuckra.

Caroline Holyoak, received the Monsignor Vaughan Award, a full scholarship for a student entering the 8th grade who exhibits exemplary behavior in the areas of scholarship, leadership, sportsmanship and cooperation.

The Utah State Arbor Day Contest was awarded to Sante DiSera.
