DRAPER — The Juan Diego Catholic High School Debate Team competed in the 3A State Debate Tournament March 6-7 to win its first ever state championship. Collin Reilly was a quarter finalist in Spar. Cody Thompson took second place in Impromptu. Richard Idriss won third place in Oratory. In the Lincoln-Douglas debate, Adam Albro was a quarter finalist and Patricia Graham was a semifinalist. In Policy Debate, Adam Schmidt and Russell Aivazian were quarter finalists, and Robert Grange and Katie Roberts were semifinalists. In Public Forum Debate, Hayes Johnson and Margaret Hazuka were quarter finalists, and Meaghan Kelliher and Joe Koronkowski won secon place. In Extemporaneous Speaking, Nick Bertagnolli won first place to become the state champion.This is the second consecutive year that Juan Diego has had a state champion in Extemporaneous Speaking. The Juan Diego Debate team won the Region VIII Debate Tournament at Carbon High School for a second consecutive region championship and the third in four years. This team worked hard to deliver their best performance and won convincingly by 59 points. In Impromptu, Catherine Lake won fifth place, and Cody Thompson won fourth place. In Student Congress, Remi Barron won fourth place. In Lincoln Douglas, Clayton Sanders won second place, and Patricia Graham won the region championship. In Public Forum, T.J. Ota and Ellen Martin won third place and Alex Ikeda and Camry Martinez won fourth place. In Extemporaneous Speaking, Nick Bertagnolli is the region champion. In Original Oratory, Sami Kobs won fourth place and A.J. Albro won third place. In Spar, Miguel Mendoza won sixth place, Colin Reilly won fourth, and Camry Martinez is the region champion. In Policy Debate, Juan Diego swept the competition. Andy Moyle and Hank Schwab won fourth, Russell Aivazian and Adam Schmidt won third, Nick Roberts and Gus Schwab won second, and Robert Grange and Katie Roberts are the region champions. Everybody who participated helped make our championships possible.
