Diocese preparing for ordinations
Friday, Jun. 13, 2014
The Diocese of Salt Lake City will celebrate the ordination of three men by Bishop John C. Wester on June 28 in the Cathedral of the Madeleine. Deacon Jorge Roldán Sánchez will be ordained a priest, and Joseph Delka and David Trujillo will be ordained transitional deacons. Both Delka and Trujillo are seminarians who are on their way to the priesthood.
The ordinations will be a great gift to the diocese, Bishop Wester said. “Their whole lives are dedicated to serving the Church; Jesus has called them to follow him in a very special way through ordained ministry. This service is, of course, essential to the Church. We need deacons and priests to celebrate the sacraments and to bring the presence of Christ to the people.”
Deacons and priests celebrate the sacraments of baptism and marriage and may preside at the Funeral Rite; priests also celebrate the sacraments of the Eucharist and Penance.
“These are the very important sacraments of the Church, and it is essential that we have deacons and priests of the Church to bring Christ to others,” Bishop Wester said.
In addition priests and deacons have an evangelical mission. The deacons have a particular charism to serve the Church and the priests to proclaim the Word of God, although the deacons proclaim the Gospel as well.
“We count on the priests and deacons to perform these service in a variety of ways in their parishes and in our diocese,” the bishop said.
The June 28 ordinations will be webcast live starting at 1 p.m. at http://www.radiofeca.com.
