SALT LAKE CITY — Four Judge Memorial Catholic High School student-athletes have been named to Utah High School Activities Association fall sports Academic All-State teams. Jessica Gaffney, Maximilian Lamb and Parker Mildenhall were named to the cross country team while Michael Hanover was named to the golf team.
"We are very proud of all four of these students," said Rick Bartman, principal at Judge. "They have learned how to balance strong work in the classroom with exceptional service to the community along with participation in co-curricular activities. They are all excellent representatives of Judge Memorial and are very deserving of this recognition."
Jessica Gaffney is the daughter of David and Lorrie Gaffney of Sandy. Jessica volunteers for her church and has worked with Amor Ministries in Mexico. Serving this year as Judge’s dance troupe president, Jessica participates in cheer, cross country, dance and track. She has been named to the honor roll all four years at Judge. In addition to earning recognition as Academic All-State, she has received numerous awards throughout her high school including academic excellence awards in biology, English, fine arts, foreign language, mathematics and theology. This year, she received the Judge Memorial Book Award awarded by Smith College. She was a member of the spring 2009 state Judge Math Team that finished third in the 11th grade small school competition. She was awarded the spring 2009 Best Student Choreography award by the dance program.
Michael Hanover is the son of Rita Hanover of Salt Lake City and Barry Hanover of Park City. Michael, who has volunteered at both the Humane Society and 10,000 Villages in Sugarhouse, is a member of the Judge lacrosse team, the men’s dance class, and plans to participate in the annual "Couples" performance at this spring’s Dance Concert. A consistent honor roll student, Michael is a member of the National Honor Society. He has received numerous academic and athletic awards while at Judge including Academic Excellence Awards in foreign language, history, physical education and science. He was named to the 2008-2009 UHSAA Class 3-A All-State Golf Team. This fall, Michael placed in the top 10 as an individual at the State Tournament, in which the Bulldogs’ golf team, the Region XI champions, finished in second place by one stroke. And this fall, Michael was named a 2009-2010 National Merit Semifinalist.
Maximilian Lamb is the son of Jeanette Sawaya of Salt Lake City and Bill Lamb of Salt Lake City. A member of St. Ambrose Parish, Max is a volunteer at J.E. Cosgriff Memorial Catholic School’s extended day program. He has also served at 10,000 Villages and as a teacher’s aide at Cosgriff. In addition to cross country, Max participates in lacrosse, track, Bulldog Press, Peer Ministry and National Honor Society, where he was named one of the four vice-presidents for this school year. Max was crowned the Region XI individual cross-country champion this year while leading the boys squad to a second place overall finish. Max has been recognized academically a number of times, including honor roll status all four year, and receiving Academic Excellence Awards in German I, II, and III; honors biology; AP biology; English; geography; mathematics; social studies; theology; and science. Last spring, he was honored by the University of Utah’s College of Humanities for outstanding performance on the 2008-09 National German Exam. This fall, he received the Judge Memorial Book Award awarded by the University of Notre Dame.
Parker Mildenhall is the son of David & Mindy Leo of Salt Lake City and Greg Mildenhall of Midvale. He is a graduate of St. Vincent de Paul’s Catholic School and has volunteered with both 10,000 Villages and the Food Bank. A recipient of the Judge Memorial Book Award awarded by Harvard University, Parker has been named a 2009-2010 National Merit Semifinalist. Parker has received Academic Excellence Awards in computer science, English, foreign language, mathematics, science, social studies and theology. A consistent honor roll student and a member of the National Honor Society, Parker has also participates in swimming, track and field, and the Bulldog Press. He was a member of the spring 2009 state Judge Math Team that finished third in the 11th grade small school competition. He was a member of the spring 2009 Judge Mathfax team that captured first place in the Division 1 Catholic Math League Algebra 2 Championship. He received the school’s 2008-09 Sister Louise Marie Award for Most Inspirational Player in cross country.
"All four are exceptional students and strong team leaders," said Dan Quinn, Judge Memorial’s Director of Athletics. "Educating the whole student is our mission at Judge, and excelling in and out of the classroom is our focus. These four have set an outstanding example for our underclassmen in that regard."
