Franciscan Father Ed Metzger

Franciscan Father Ed Metzger, 78, died July 25, 2011 in St. Petersburg, Fla.Father Metzger was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on Sept. 10, 1932, the son of Alphonse and Mary Elizabeth Harkins. He attended seminary at Holy Name College in Washington, D.C. and completed post-graduate studies at Case Western Reserve University in New York. He was ordained a priest in the Order of Friars Minor on April 25, 1959; he was a Franciscan for 57 years and a priest for 52 years.Fr. Metzger served in the Diocese of Salt Lake City for eight years, beginning as a parochial vicar at Saints Peter and Paul Parish in West Valley City in 2002. From 2003 to 2010 he was parochial administrator of Saint Anthony of Padua Parish in Helper. 

A wake for Fr. Metzger will be held July 28 from 2 to 4 p.m. at St. Anthony Friary, 357 2nd Street North, St. Petersburg, Fla. The wake service will be at 3:30 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated July 29 at 10 a.m. in Saint Mary our Lady of Grace Church, 515 4th Street South, St. Petersburg, Fla. Burial will be in the Friars' Plot of Calvary Cemetery in Clearwater, Fla.
