SALT LAKE CITY — Gabor F. Szemerey, 81, died Jan. 10, at his home. He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Parish. Szemerey was born May 10, 1926, in Satu Mare Hungary, to Istvan and Irma Szemerey. He entered military school at the age 4, and as a young man fought with the Hungarian Air Force to defend his country. He came to America where he became a proud citizen of the United States and joined the U.S. Air Force. He moved to Salt Lake City, where he met and married his wife of 48 years. He worked for the Salt Lake City Water Works Department as a supervisor for many years, then for the Diocese of Salt Lake City, and for Sam Skaggs until he retired. He then started his favorite job as a crossing guard. He was a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He is survived by his daughters, Ildiko (Sid) Haycock, Sylvia (Mark) Chidester, Malinda (Tony) Kassapakis; son, Steven D. (Vickie) Szemerey, all of Salt Lake City; grandchildren, Angela (Jason) Smith, Patrick Haycock, Mark (Jessica) Chidester, Nick (Nicole) Kassapakis, Amber Kassapakis, Carley Szemerey, Taylor Szemerey, and Cameran Dansie. A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. The family would like to thank Msgr. M. Francis Mannion and (retired) Father Thomas J. Kaiser for their visits.
