SALT LAKE CITY — Nearly 130 lay Catholic ministry leaders in the Diocese of Salt Lake City have received education here in Utah through programs designed specifically for their needs by the Congar Institute for Ministry Development.

The mission of the institute, a ministry of the Southern Dominican Province, is to support and develop lay ecclesial ministry.

To help sustain the institute, the lay ministers in the Diocese of Salt Lake City established an annual fundraiser three years ago. This year, the "Gala Congar" will be celebrated on Saturday, Aug. 17, at Saint Vincent de Paul Church.

Besides music, food, drinks, silent and live auctions and Vegas-style games, the gala includes presentation of the Yves Congar Award.

The award is named after Yves Congar (1904-1995), who was a Dominican friar "who spent his life proving the conviction that every baptized member of the Body of Christ is equal in dignity," said Dominican Father Wayne Cavalier, director of the Texas-based Congar Institute.

Fr. Cavalier said that although Fr. Congar’s teachings at first were seen as suspect, later he was called by Pope John XXIII to help construct the reforms of the Second Vatican Council. He was named a cardinal in 1994.

This year’s recipient of the Yves Congar Award is Gregory Glenn, who has served as director of liturgy and music at the Cathedral of the Madeleine since 1990. In 1996, he established The Madeleine Choir School as a full time, coeducational Catholic school.

He now serves as the school’s pastoral administrator; his role includes teaching upper-grade courses in theology.

Before coming to Utah from Washington, D.C., Glenn served on the music staff at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. His education includes undergraduate studies in Organ Performance at Seattle Pacific University and graduate work in Liturgical Studies at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.

"The goal of the gala is to help us raise funds to support our efforts to provide excellent education/formation to lay leaders in under-served dioceses," Fr. Cavalier said.
