Helen Vigil passed away on April 24 at her home in West Valley City at the age of 93. Helen was born in Pitkin, Colorado to Felipita Pacheco and Henry B. Vigil on December 25, 1930.
Helen later married Adolfo Martinez, and two children were born of this marriage: Mabel Martinez and Elsie Martinez. Helen was raised in Pilar, New Mexico and later moved to Utah. Helen worked as a resident assistant at what was then known as the Utah State Training School for 30 years.
After her retirement, Helen spent her time gardening, crocheting and spending time with her grandchildren, who were the joy of her life. Helen was an extreme fan of basketball and loved the Jazz team. She loved her Jazz jersey, blankets and shirts. Helen was a strong and independent woman who left an impression on those who met her. She was a single mom who left a lasting impression on her daughters. Helen was a devoted Catholic, attending daily Mass until her passing.
Helen is survived by her daughters, May Romo (Arthur), and Elsie Herrera; sisters Betty Trujillo (New Mexico), Vickie Valerio (Utah), and her brother Billy Vigil (New Mexico). Helen is preceded in death by her brothers Felix Vigil, Henry Vigil, Meliton Vigil, Orlando Vigil and sister Mary Vigil.
A funeral Mass was celebrated on Friday, April 28 at St. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, West Valley City. A graveside service was held at American Fork Cemetery following the Mass; interment followed.
