The descent of the Holy Spirit on Mary and the Disciples after the Resurrection is celebrated on the Feast of Pentecost. At the Vigil of Pentecost June 3, in the Cathedral of the Madeleine, Diocesan Administrator Msgr. J. Terrence Fitzgerald censes the paschal candle at the beginning of Mass. At right, Msgr. Fitzgerald confers the Sacrament of Confirmation, a gift of the Holy Spirit, upon Maria Concepción Briseño of Sacred Heart Parish. Her sponsor, Dolores Gutierrez, stands behind her. The Feast of Pentecost is rich with symbols of the Holy Spirit – the dove seen by Saint John the Baptist after he baptized Jesus in the River Jordan; the wind heard in the closed upper room as the Holy Spirit descended upon the disciples; and tongues of fire seen to descend on the disciples’ heads, after which the disciples were heard ‘speaking in tongues,’ and being well understood by all who heard them. The homily for the Vigil of Pentecost is found on page 13.
