As part of the observances of the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe on Dec. 12, the diocesan jail ministry of Salt Lake County shared the story of the Guadalupe apparition with inmates to help them understand how the process of hearing and believing the Gospel of Salvation can begin with appreciating the significance of this nearly 500-year-old story. As part of this year’s observances, inmates were asked to write down their needs and prayers in a notebook, which was taken to the evening celebrations at Saint Martin de Porres and Saint Joseph the Worker parishes. In addition, groups of 10 to 12 inmates prayed a portion of the rosary, which served to enliven their understanding of the day and the practice of faith. The ministers who helped with these observances were Susan Dillon, Cabrini Riddle and Deacon Joaquin Mixco from St. Martin de Porres Parish; and Deacon Greg Werking of Blessed Sacrament Parish, who also is the coordinator of the Utah state prison ministry. Shown with an image of Our Lady of Guadalupe are Deacon Mixco (left) and Deacon Werking.
