Jane Hipley of Kihei, Hawaii, was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on October 29, 1940. She passed peacefully of Alzheimer’s disease. She was the daughter of the late Charles and Elizabeth Howard.
She was preceded in death by her sister Ann Hackleman and her niece Catherine Mansour. She is survived by her cherished husband Robert Hipley; her daughters Kimm (Patrick) Loughlin, Elizabeth (Michael) Nafus, Laurie (Zane Robertson) Hipley; and her nephew Scott Hamer. She was the beloved grandmother to Brian, Kevin and Brendan Loughlin; Preston (Rosanna), Kendrick (Makenzi), Ciarra and Samuel Nafus; Miles Robertson and Ani Hipley and two great-grandchildren, Matthew and Christian Nafus.
Jane was a long-time resident of Bountiful, Utah and taught for 22 years at St. Olaf Catholic School. She was the Diocesan Teacher of the Year 2001-2002. She especially enjoyed sharing her love of reading. She and Bob were very involved in Marriage Encounter. Jane was the founding president of the Ladies of Charity, St. Olaf’s Chapter. Jane and Bob were made Associates of the Daughters of Charity and consider the sisters family. They have many longtime friends from their days at Ohio State, towns they have lived and people with whom they joyously crossed paths. Jane and Bob visited sites on five continents. They loved road trips, cruises and endured long plane rides for the places and people they found along the way.
A few family memories: She loved color. She found great joy in the little things, especially her kids and grandkids. She threw amazing birthday parties. Holidays were all about tradition and every year she cried the night before, worried that she wouldn’t make everyone happy — you did, Mom! She was the most playful and yet overly serious person we knew. She had strong opinions but delivered them with love, although Dad may have a few corrections to offer about that. She adored her Hubbin, and our parents set an amazing example of married love.
Her Mass of Christian Burial was at St. Theresa Church, Kihei, Hawaii, on October 28, 2024. Interment was at the National Cemetery of Maui.
We are grateful for the amazing people at Islands Hospice, and Kathy Couch and the staff of Kihei Adult Daycare for their skilled care given with love.
