Jennie Marie (Marcano-Garcia) Douglas, 97, passed away peacefully on June 9, 2023 at Holladay Home, Salt Lake City.
Jennie was born on February 14, 1926, in Gurabo, Puerto Rico and grew up in Caguas just south of San Juan. She met her first husband, Sgt. Ben Garcia, a cryptographer at San Juan’s U.S. Army base. They were married in Puerto Rico for 43 years and had four children together: Rosabelle, Daniel, Laura-Christine and Adon-Bernard. For most of her life, she worked at the Tooele Army Depot with her husband, who had been promoted to chief of security until retirement. She was widowed in 1983 and remarried seven years later to Wilfred Lavier (Doc) Douglas until his death in 1994.
Jennie enjoyed many passions in life, especially Bingo Night at St. Marguerite Catholic Church and St. Ann Catholic Church. In her free time, she loved making crocheted/knitted blankets for family and friends. She also loved growing her own green chilies, tomatoes and her houseplants. Jennie also raised ducks for many years for their eggs, also to help keep the earwigs/bugs down in her back yard. Among her most beloved spoils of life was cooking, specifically authentic Puerto Rican food. Her specialties were habichuelas (rice and beans), black-eyed peas, morcillas (blood sausage), and savory empanadas. Grandma also had a fondness for Chinese food and would frequent her local Chinese restaurants, whether it be after Bingo night, wrestling, or just because she had a hankering for some chow mein. When she wasn’t with her family, winning a Bingo game, or making delicious food, she enjoyed attending wrestling matches, her favorites being “Roy Shires,” “Gorgeous George” and “Little Beaver.”
Jennie is survived by her son, Adon B. Garcia, Salt Lake City; her sisters Laura Caruncho, Gladys Marcano and Felita Castro, San Juan, Puerto Rico; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated by Father Kenneth Vialpando on June 17, 2023 at 1:30 p.m. in the St. Joseph Villa chapel, 451 E. Bishop Federal Lane, Salt Lake City.
Jennie will be laid to rest with her first husband, Ben Garcia, at the Tooele City Cemetery.
We are deeply saddened by her passing but are joyful that she is now resting peacefully with our Lord. She will be dearly missed. Rest in peace, Grandma Jennie, we love you!
