SALT LAKE CITY — The Shamrock Shindig at St. Catherine Parish Newman Center March 10, was an event of which the Irish themselves would have been proud.

The Shindig was complete with Irish dancers from the Crawford School of Dance in Salt Lake City, corned beef sandwiches, and coleslaw. There were Celtic bands including David Tomer (Irish Fiddle), the Joe Welsh Band, and the Dave Hahn Group.

The Shamrock Shindig also featured a silent auction with many items donated by the St. Catherine Parish including paintings, baskets full of goodies, day retreats, and a session on fly fishing.

Following the silent auction was a live auction which highlighted special themes for dinners sponsored by many people from the community including Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon, Dominican Father Bart Hutcherson, former Newman Center associate pastor, and an evening of magical enchantment with Dominican Father Daniel Rolland, St. Catherine Parish Newman Center associate pastor.

There were also Jazz tickets, a trip to Hawaii, and prizes including more than 50 bottles of wine, and Newman Center T-shirts®.

All proceeds from the event will go toward funding the new roof for the St. Catherine Newman Center, and especially for the students alternative spring break.

There are 24 Catholic students from the Newman Center who attend the University of Utah who will go on a labor mission for one week to New Orleans, La., to help in the rebuilding efforts still remaining after Hurricane Katrina. The mission will help provide shelter, comfort, and hope to many people still in need.

Dominican Father Peter Rogers, pastor of St. Catherine Parish Newman Center thanked everyone for their generosity and support, and said to them, "May the luck of the Irish be with you… God’s Blessings, too!"
