Johannes Carolus De Jong SALT LAKE CITY — Johannes "Joe" Carolus De Jong, 70, died Sept. 4, 2010. De Jong was born April 6, 1920 to William and Maria De Jong in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. As a young man, he served during World War II with the Dutch Marines. After the war ended in Europe, he volunteered to fight for the U.S. against Japan and was trained at Camp Lejeune, N.C. When Japan surrendered, he was sent to fight in the war between Holland and Indonesia where he served as a master sergeant and medical corpsman for three years. He married Johanna Roadhof in Holland on Nov. 17, 1951. In 1957, he brought his family to the United States to build a better life for them. He learned English and became a successful salesman and then a citizen. He loved gardening, entertaining and a good party. He was a greeter and usher for many years at Saint Ann Parish. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Johanna; his sons Bill (Leona), John (Janet) and Jeff; daughter Frances (Blake); nine grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. A funeral Mass was celebrated at Saint Ann Catholic Church.
