Joseph Gerald Byrne, Ph.D.

SALT LAKE CITY — Joseph Gerald Byrne, 79, died July 10, 2010 after a brief illness.

Byrne was born July 15, 1930 in the Bronx, N.Y. He attended Mount Saint Michael High School and Stevens Institute of Technology and received a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering in 1953, and a Master of Science in 1957 in metallurgy. He earned a Ph.D. from Northwestern University in metallurgy in 1960. He was a professor at Stevens Institute of Technology and then became a full professor at the University of Utah, where he was appointed Ivor D. Thomas Professor of Physical Metallurgy in the Department of Metallurgy and Metallurgical Engineering in 1987. He was also a professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering He was a distinguished teacher and research scientist with more than 145 articles and a book, and received many distinguished awards and appointments to advisory boards. He became a Fellow of the American Society of Metals in 1982.

He loved traveling both for business and pleasure, and enjoyed traveling with his family and friends. He had a great sense of humor marked especially by his dry wit.

He is survived by his four children and their spouses Beth (Joseph) Kucharski, Maura (Mark) Hashiguchi, Dan Byrne (Christine Davison) and Noreen (Douglas) Perry; seven grandchildren Timothy (Kate) Vigour), Michael, and Ann Kucharski, Lauren, Shannon, and Patrick Hasiguchi, and Courtney Parry, and step-grandchild, Kim Davison.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at Saint Catherine of Sienna Parish and Newman Center. Committal was in Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
