Juan Diego Announces 'A Night Of ... Unity, Community & Harmony'

Friday, Oct. 12, 2007

DRAPER: Juan Diego is renowned for hosting premier community festivals. So the long-awaited event it is unveiling will have some surprises.

The Catholic high school will hold "A Night Of… Unity, Community & Harmony" on November 3, 2007 at the Grand America Hotel, showcasing its aspiring student talent in addition to celebrating together with dinner and dancing.

Guests will see a new twist to the typical fundraiser. True to its motto Spiritus Donorum (Latin for "Spirit of Giving"), Juan Diego has created a "Circle of Sharing". Rather than bidding on auction items they may never use, guests will "bid" on the needs of the school.

The displayed needs of each academic department and extracurricular activity will be represented in the "Circle", with opportunities to contribute to one or more purposes they care about.

"In a way, it’s like the story of Stone Soup," said Jill Cushing, a Juan Diego parent volunteer.

"A community that unites for a cause not only realizes the accumulative benefit of their gifts, but they all feel grateful for the experience of coming together to share what they have."

Cushing said that Juan Diego’s impressive campus and student accomplishments often give the impression there is no need. Juan Diego Events Coordinator, Lynelle Williams concurred.

"Nearly half of our families could not attend were it not for the contributions of many," Williams noted, "And a donation to buy a single book is as important as underwriting a new innovative approach – all gifts ensure the most destitute and/or the brightest of students have the greatest chance of academic success."

Cushing cited recent example of student-driven campaigns to aid others as examples of their desire to move away from consumer-based fundraising and a return to true, selfless philanthropy.

"Whether it was in response to an episodic need like the recent mine collapse or a classmate with cancer; or a systemic need like schools for war-torn Uganda, these kids are wanting to make a difference," Cushing said.

"They do it without receiving a trinket or recognition. They are so tuned in to the mission," Cushing said, "Taking their lead, this new event is designed to keep us mindful of our great fortune and the value of working together to ensure everyone has a seat at the table."
