OGDEN — Members of the League of Promoters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, family and friends gathered to celebrate the installation of three new members with a Mass at Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Ogden on June 7.

The Mass, at which those present also prayed for healing, was celebrated on the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Father Victor Alvarado, parochial vicar, presided.

The group, which has a devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, shares “the love of the Sacred Heart with like-minded individuals,” Fr. Alvarado said about the ministry, adding that the members of the League of Promoters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus are in service to the Sacred Heart by joining in group prayers with special intentions. The prayers include the Litany of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Consecration of the Human Race to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and the Apostleship of Prayer with each monthly intention selected by the pope.

“Promoters of the Sacred Heart have never skipped a beat when it comes to promoting the Sacred Heart of Jesus,” Fr. Alvarado said. “They have acted as the living, breathing heartbeat of Christ by pumping new blood and new life into the body of the Church.”

Among the group’s works are prayers for the sick, reciting the rosary at funerals and assisting with the pall at funerals upon request. They also celebrate the divinity of Christ at each of their events.

The three new members who were accepted into the league were Bel Randall, Poenia Suddarth and Roslyn Dunsmore. Each received a pin and a packet of rules at the Mass.

“Receive this pin of the Apostleship of Prayer. … You have been received and enrolled in the Apostleship of Prayer and share all the graces, indulgences, privileges and spiritual benefits of the association,” Fr. Alvarado told the new members.

The members of the league also believe in and act upon the seven Corporal Works of Mercy: feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, visit the sick and visit the imprisoned, bury the death and shelter the homeless. To fulfill these works, they actively do collection drives.

Being a member of the league is a way of life, said Camille Loffredo, who has been a member of the league for decades. “The Promoters league’s objective is to promote the Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and to share one’s love of the Sacred Heart with like-minded individuals.”

The June 7 ceremony was followed by a luncheon at the Prairie Schooner Steak House.

The Members of the League of Promoters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus began at St. Joseph Parish but has extended to now include the parishes of St. Mary in West Haven, St. James the Just in Ogden and Holy Family in Ogden.

The League of Promoters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is comprised of lay women; it has been in service for more than 100 years.
