SALT LAKE CITY — Prayer will be the topic of this year’s Diocesan Lenten Retreat, which is scheduled for March 22, at Saint Vincent de Paul Parish in Holladay.

The day will start with the retreat in Spanish from 9 a.m. to noon; the English retreat will take place from 1 to 4 p.m.

Father Gabriel Mosher, OP, will give the retreat in English; Father Marco Tulio Lopez will present the one in Spanish. The theme for both will be “Prayer, A Hopeful Relationship.”

In the English retreat, “with guidance from Father Gabriel Mosher, OP, attendees will explore ways to deepen their relationship with God and strengthen their prayer life,” said Peri Flanagan, director of the diocesan Office of Faith Formation, who is organizing the retreat.

Fr. Mosher has been pastor of St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Newman Center in Salt Lake City since 2022. He entered the Dominican order in 2007 and, as a brother, was assigned to St. Catherine’s for a year in 2011. After returning to his studies, he was ordained a priest in 2015. For seven years prior to his most recent assignment in Salt Lake City, Fr. Mosher was the parochial vicar at the Holy Rosary Parish in Portland, Ore.

At last year’s Utah Catholic Conference, Fr. Mosher gave a presentation on ways a family can pray together, noting that, as the fundamental building block of the Church, the family is where the faith is nurtured and handed on.

Fr. Tulio Lopez is pastor of St. Bridget Parish in Milford and its associated missions. Originally from El Salvador, he was ordained a priest on Dec. 20, 1997 in El Salvador by the Most Rev. Jose Oscar Barahona, Bishop of San Vicente. Since 2008 he has been serving in the Diocese of Salt Lake City, where his appointments have included associate pastor of St. Mary of the Assumption Parish in Park City, administrator of San Felipe Parish in Wendover, and pastor of St. Andrew Parish in Riverton.

Before arriving in Utah, Fr. Lopez worked for several years in the Diocese of Tyler in Texas. His ministry there included close involvement with the Hispanic community, providing Scripture study, family formation and catechesis.
