Madeleine medals presented

Four Sacred Heart parishioners, Celia Trujillo, Lourdes Quiñonez and Guadalupe and Candelario Hernández, were awarded the Madeleine Medal of Appreciation for Faithful Service on July 14. The Most Rev. John C. Wester, Bishop of Salt Lake City, presented the medals.

SALT LAKE CITY — Four Sacred Heart parishioners were awarded the Madeleine Medal of Appreciation for Faithful Service on July 14. The Most Rev. John C. Wester, Bishop of Salt Lake City, presented the medals. 

The Madeleine Medal is a new award in the Diocese of Salt Lake City. It is intended to honor those who have exemplified faithful service to a parish or the community over many years.

More than 10 years ago, Guadalupe and Candelario Hernández formed what is now the Sacred Heart Choir, which provides music during all the parish’s weekend Masses, English and Spanish alike.

Guadalupe also teaches First Communion classes.

The other two parishioners who were recognized were Celia Trujillo and Lourdes Quiñonez. Both have been teachers for the Sacrament of Confirmation class, and Lourdes is the director of ministers and lectors at the parish. Both also participate in the EMAUS program at the diocese, which forms Spanish-speaking lay ministers over a four-year period.

"We want to recognize them [Guadalupe and Candelario] because all the music and the efforts that they put so we can have music in Spanish and in English at our Masses and at our weddings, quinceañeras…," said Father Eugenio Yarce, pastor of Sacred Heart Parish.

Celia Trujillo and Lourdes Quiñonez "are two people who have worked very hard and shoulder to shoulder in our parish programs. The time that they dedicated to the parish is phenomenal," said Fr. Yarce. "They [all] deserve this award."

In presenting the awards, Bishop Wester said, "Thank you for the efforts and work you do in this parish."
