Father Oscar Marquina celebrated his first Mass as a priest on July 1 at his home parish, St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Hyde Park. Concelebrating were several of his priest friends with whom he went through seminary, as well as four priests of the Diocese of Salt Lake City: Fr. Gustavo Vidal, Fr. Rogelio Felix-Rosas, Fr. Robin Cruz and Fr. Francisco Pires. The homilist was Father Josh Nehnevaj of the Archdiocese of Seattle, a seminary classmate, who addressed several of his comments to Fr. Marquina. Following the Mass, Fr. Marquina thanked the congregation for their support of him, and encouraged the children present who may be hearing a call to a vocation to pray to the Blessed Mother because she would guide them along the discernment path. In an interview after the Mass, he said, “I just thought the whole Mass was perfect. … The particular thing that I loved the most was having one of my close friends give the homily, speak directly to me.”
