Bishop Oscar A. Solis celebrated the traditional Memorial Day Mass at Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery May 31. Concelebrating were Msgr. Colin F. Bircumshaw, vicar general; Msgr. J. Terrence Fitzgerald, vicar general emeritus; and several priests of the diocese. It was an opportunity to gratefully remember, honor and pray for the repose of the souls of those military men and women who “served, fought and died for our country. … giving up their lives so that we may live freely and enjoy stability, prosperity and peace,” said the bishop, who also called to mind the veterans’ families who were left behind. In addition, he thanked the veterans who were present for their service, and thanked God that they “give us a daily reminder of your courage and the sacrifices you have done for our sake.” At the end of the Mass, the bishop asked all of the veterans present to stand to be acknowledged, and he prayed that God would give them health and peace and happiness.
