RIVERDALE (Christian Heritage High School) — Samantha Lawrence is a senior at Christian Heritage High School, Riverdale, Utah. She is hard working, highly motivated, and committed to academic excellence. She pursues a strenuous academic load, including Advanced Placement (AP) classes in calculus, physics, and English and her unweighted grade point average is 4.0, which she has retained throughout all her school years.

Samantha enjoys challenging herself to become a well-rounded student. She has won many awards and has taken on many unique challenges across a wide spectrum of subjects. Her first love is science and engineering but Samantha has developed strong literary, artistic, and historical sides too.

For the second year, Sam has participated in the literary magazine at school. This year she was selected the editor-in-chief. Developing her skillful writing techniques has become a passion for Samantha. She has written award-winning technical papers for her science fair projects, attended the INTEL International Science and Engineering Fair three times, composed summer scholarship essays, earned the privilege to attend a one-week American Society of Metals Camp at the University of Missouri-Rolla and a three-week Summer Minority Engineering Training at the Colorado School of Mines. She was the only student from Utah selected to attend these camps this past summer. In addition, Sam won an essay contest to be one of 10 Utah students to attend the Army National Guard’s Lewis and Clark Rendezvous in North Dakota. Furthermore, she took a second place art award and a Juror’s Award for a wood sculpture.

Samantha’s interest in writing and history lead her to start a Veteran’s Writing Workshop which provides her an opportunity to assist others (men and women of all ages) to tell and publish their memoirs. She facilitated two eight-week sessions.

Samantha is a lector at her church, St. Florence Mission, in Huntsville. She tutors math, science, and English for students at her parish and school. Sam serves as the youngest volunteer guide at the Hill Aerospace Museum. She also helped to raise money for the building of a Habitat for Humanity house.

Due to her academics, leadership, and community service Samantha received Student-of-the-Month and Year recognitions from the Ogden Exchange Club. In addition, she applied to five colleges receiving scholarships to four (Gonzaga University, Washington State University, Colorado School of Mines and the University of Utah) in the science and engineering field as well as general admissions. Samantha’s interest is in metallurgy and material science. She has accepted admission to the Colorado School of Mines this fall.
