A new endowment has been established by the Diocese of Salt Lake City through the Catholic Foundation of Utah “to provide financial support for the preservation and care of Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Salt Lake City – from monuments to trees, chapel repairs to pathways, so that every family finds dignity and every resting place receives respectful care,” according to the endowment’s establishing documents.
Endowments with the CFU may be created to benefit any entity or ministry in the diocese. They require a minimum initial investment of $10,000, but once they are created donations of any amount may be contributed. The money is invested, and a percentage of the interest earned on the investment is distributed annually to the beneficiaries.
Funds from the Mount Calvary endowment will go toward the perpetual care of the cemetery rather than for specific projects, said Father John Evans, vicar general.
He encouraged those who are able to consider donating to the new endowment.
“In the distant future, when there are no more plots to be sold,” the diocese will still have the perpetual care of the cemetery, Fr. Evans said, and “we wanted to create this endowment so that we can continue to mow the lawn and take care of all of the ground maintenance and everything that needs to happen at a cemetery perpetually.”
