Eleanor Rockelman McReynolds

SALT LAKE CITY — Eleanor (Elon) Bator Rockelman McReynolds, 92, died Dec. 12, 2010.

McReynolds was born Jan. 27, 1918, to John and Zuzanna Foto Bator. She was a fiercely independent woman who worked her way through business college and nurse’s training, manned a forest look-out tower and visited Mexico by herself on a whim. While working in the Navy Yard at Puget Sound in Bremerton, Wash., she met and married Al Rockelman, a Marine serving on the USS Nevada. They raised three children. She juggled nursing, caring for her husband, who had cancer, and the tropical fish business from home. They divorced in 1967. She volunteered for Civil Defense Triage Block Captain and was a faithful member of the altar society and Jednota Slovak Catholic Ladies League. She later married John McReynolds and together they were amateur gardeners, visited their children and grandchildren, and watched the Utah Jazz. He died in 2003.

She is survived by her children Michael (Virginia), Craig (Marilynn), Tanya (Jim) Broadbent; former daughter-in-law Sally Rockelman; step-daughters Donna (Rudy) Pino, Linda Cook and Peggy (Steve) White; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren and their spouses; and two brothers.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at the Carmel of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Monastery in Holladay, and a Gregorian Mass was celebrated at the Abbey of Our Lady of Holy Trinity in Huntsville. Graveside services are pending for the spring.
