SALT LAKE CITY — Since September, students at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School have been enjoying regular classroom visits from Father J.J. Schwall, Our Lady of Lourdes parish priest, who led discussions to complement their religious education teachings.
During a recent visit with middle-school students, Father J.J. spoke about technology and whether it helps or hinders people of faith. He remarked that technology (smartphones and other similar devices) allow people so much choice in pursuing what they  like that they develop a mentality in which their own standards of judgment become those that are most important: “Whatever we like must be objectively good.” He explained how this cultivates an individual sense of standards in place of adopting those that are collectively agreed upon. He concluded that it remains an open question as to whether or not technology helps people grow in faith or not.
During a visit to the sixth-grade class, Father J.J. spoke about the Ten Commandments, which the students have been learning. The students asked if there were any exceptions to the Ten Commandments, such as “Thou shall not kill,” and how the Church views issues related to killing people in a war.  Father J.J explained the idea of “just war” and how killing at any time is not allowed.  However, in war, killing may be a necessity and the Church does not consider that as breaking the commandment.
“It was a very cool and interesting conversation between us and our priest about an honestly confusing topic,” sixth-grader Reece Pingree said. “He [Father J.J.] said it in a way that was very easy to understand.”
May Renteria commented, “I finally understand the Ten Commandments and how they apply with life decisions.”
With the younger students, Father J.J.’s visits have covered a variety of topics, from the importance of doing the right thing and what happens when we take Christ out of Christmas, to learning more about saints and gifts from God and the importance of listening to God. He even had a chance to share his journey of becoming a priest, along with his favorite food, favorite color and how many states he has lived in.
“It was nice to see him and get to know him a bit,” said second-grader Riley Vigil.
The discussions have been fun and faith-filled for the students, and they are looking forward to more of Fr. J.J.’s visits and discussions to help them realize the many ways God is working in their lives.
