SALT LAKE CITY — Peter Mitsuo Oki, 85, died March 1, 2011 at Silverado Senior Living Center following a prolonged decline in health. Oki was born in Salt Lake City on June 4, 1925 to Kinuye Tashima and Otoichi Oki. He graduated from West High School. He joined the 442nd Regimental Battalion during World War II and served in Italy until he was medically discharged. He married Margaret "Chako" Kasai in February 1949, and together they raised six children. He loved his family and warmly embraced his children’s spouses and friends and his many nieces and nephews. Oki patiently taught and coached his kids, nieces, nephews and grandkids in the finer points of fishing and bowling, which brought him great joy. As an able gardener and parent, he seemed to know exactly what each of his children needed to thrive and gave generously to them. In 2005, he was able to fulfill a lifelong goal of returning to Italy with Margaret. Through his declining health, his recent years were focused on the care and comfort of Margaret, also a resident of Silverado Senior Living. He is survived by his wife, Margaret; sister, Sumi Arakaki; six children, Judith, Jeanne (Charles Lundgren), Russell (Julianne), Jocelyn (David Ogata), Patrick (Jennifer) and Julie (William Maurey); six grandchildren, Lori Sagers (Michael), Patrick Jr., Casey, Jennifer, Alex, and Mason Oki. A funeral Mass was celebrated at the Cathedral of the Madeleine.
