SALT LAKE CITY — Members of the Diocese of Salt Lake City’s Commission on Liturgy and its two committees, music and arts and architecture, met for the annual Plenary Session on Feb. 22. Members of these committees are appointed by the bishop to advise him in his role as chief liturgist. They also develop programs to enhance the formation of liturgical ministers and enliven worship in every parish as required by Sacrosanctum Concilium, the Constitution on Sacred Liturgy.
In his opening remarks at the session, Bishop Oscar A. Solis emphasized the importance of synodality in accompanying parishes as they effect vibrant worship through liturgies that are well-ordered, reverent and joyful with the full participation of every person in the assembly. With a reminder that “liturgy is the heart of the celebration of our faith,” Bishop Solis stressed that every aspect of parish life should demonstrate Christian hospitality.
The newly appointed chairman of the commission, Father Rafael Murillo, administrator of Saint Marguerite Parish, gave a teaching on the mystagogy of the sacraments, reminding those present that people continue to grow in grace and in understanding of the faith throughout their lives.
Also during the session, two new committee chairpersons, Bill Bonn (Arts and Architecture) and Anthony Ray (Music), were introduced and gave their visions and plans for the upcoming year. Past chairpersons John Sparano and Patti O’Connor were thanked for their many years of service.
In other action during the Feb. 22 event, members of the diocesan Office of Worship presented updates for ongoing liturgical ministry formation and revisions to the liturgical books of the Church.
