During this Jubilee Year of Hope, numerous groups are being honored. On Feb. 8-9, worldwide members of the armed forces, police and security personnel will gather in Rome to celebrate the Jubilee. Eighty-four years ago, U.S. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt declared war on Japan after the bombing of Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. This marked the entry of the United States into World War II. To bring hope and solace to both military personnel and civilians, on March 7, 1943, the Most Rev. Duane G. Hunt, fifth Bishop of Salt Lake, dedicated a shrine in the Cathedral of the Madeleine “as a place of special prayer for the men and boys of the parish who are serving their country by land, sea or air.” Shown is Private Joseph Finster of Camp Kearns kneeling in prayer before the shrine shortly after its dedication.
