Aug. 12, 1933 ~ Aug. 22, 2024

Our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend Raquel Ortega, 91, reunited with her husband, George, in Heaven on Aug. 22, 2024, surrounded by her family.

Raquel was born Aug. 12, 1933, to Edmundo and Francisca De La Vega on their ranch in La Mesa Sandía, Durango, Mexico. She married her love, George Ortega, on March 29, 1959 in their hometown of Santa Bárbara, Chihuahua, Mexico. They renewed their vows in 2009.

Soon after marrying, Raquel and George moved to the Avenues of Salt Lake City so George could fulfill his reserve time with the U.S. Army at Fort Douglas. They spent four years there then moved to Bountiful, which they would call home for the next 61 years.

Raquel took immense pride and joy in caring for and doting on her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Even in her final years, she would unequivocally ask, “What can I do for you?” or “Can I get you anything?” She was often seen in her kitchen, singing along to George’s piano renditions of classic Mexican songs while cooking arroz, frijoles and enchiladas. Talented dancers, she and George would step to their favorite romantic tunes, cheek to cheek.

Raquel was a devout, ever-praying Catholic. She and George were lifelong members of St. Olaf Catholic Church. She dedicated much of herself in service, notably cleaning the parish and church offices for many years.

Raquel will be remembered for her incredible love and friendship. Her home offered a sanctuary where her friends, family and frequent visitors were always welcome. Tea with visiting friends was a cherished occurrence in her household. Her sincere warmth and benevolence toward others was palpable – a rare example of selflessness and charity. Above all else, she valued giving herself to others.

Raquel is survived by her sisters Elva, Judith and Francisca; her children Rachel (Robert Nicholas), Edward and Robert (Jennifer); grandchildren David (Elizabeth), Carver (Tanner) and Alexander (Nancy); and great-grandchildren Owen, James and Vivian. She was preceded in death by Edmundo and Francisca; her siblings Jesús, Edmundo, Aquiles and Mário; and husband George.

Raquel’s family expresses their immense thanks to all those who helped her at the end of her life, including Josefina Lovato, Ma de Jesús Domínquez Sandoval and Reyna Lovato.

The viewing will be at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 29, followed by the funeral Mass 11 a.m. at Saint Olaf Catholic Church, 1800 S. Orchard Dr., Bountiful.
