SALT LAKE CITY — Sacred Heart Catholic Parish will be hosting a special Jubilee of Hope pilgrimage to the Cathedral of the Madeleine.
Plans have been under way since the 2025 Year of Hope was in its final preparation stages, said Father Roberto Montoro Sasia, pastor. The procession to the cathedral will depart from Sacred Heart Parish in Salt Lake City; he also invites participants to attend informational presentations about pilgrimages prior to the pilgrimage.
This pilgrimage is meant to encourage “the parishioners to put in practice and receive this great blessing of the indulgence,” Fr. Montoro said; participants will also “pray during the pilgrimage and show through the streets how the Catholic faith is alive.”
Participants in pilgrimages during the Jubilee Year may receive a plenary indulgence if certain other conditions are met, including receiving the Eucharist, going to Confession and praying for the intentions of the pope.
This type of pilgrimage is one way for the faithful to live and put into action their Catholic faith, Fr. Montoro said.
“This [pilgrimage] is a great opportunity for the parishioners who don’t know how to get a plenary indulgence to learn about it and realize that putting our faith in action is not hard; everyone can do it,” he said.
Now more than ever every Catholic needs to get closer to God and open their hearts, “especially in these hard and worrisome times that we are living with all our migrants,” Fr. Montoro said. “It’s very important to know that we are not alone; our Lord Jesus is here with us.”
When people get together, “we can be witnesses of the unity,” he added. “God has created all of us with dignity and respect, so we have to put our lives in his hands and have him as the center of our lives.”
In preparation for the pilgrimage, the parish will offer a series of presentations about the Jubilee Year; these will include topics such as the history of the Jubilees, prayers and what a plenary indulgence is. The presentations will be Tuesday-Friday, March 18-21, 8-9 p.m. each night at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 174 East 900 South, Salt Lake City.
Everyone is invited. Fr. Montoro suggests that people register with their ages so that presentations can be tailored to the age groups, from toddlers to 11 years old, from 12 to 18, from 19 to 25 and older.
“All this has the purpose of gaining the plenary indulgence and having a better understanding of our faith and we can go and live it in camaraderie and with the grace of God,” Fr. Montoro said.
Bishop Oscar A. Solis designated five churches across the Diocese of Salt Lake City as pilgrimage sites for this Jubilee Year of Hope. These churches are the Cathedral of the Madeleine in Salt Lake City, Saint George Catholic Church in St. George, Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Orem and Notre Dame de Lourdes Catholic Church in Price.
