OGDEN — Saint Joseph Elementary School opened its doors to the community recently for an evening to promote the importance of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education in the 21st century.
“Tonight’s event helps motivate our students to participate in and experience different aspects of STEM,” said Nancy Essary, principal. “Students come together in teams with their families and participate with hands-on learning opportunities.”
One of the main objectives behind STEM night was to make learning fun, and the crowds of smiling and excited students and parents proved that this goal was accomplished.
“It’s amazing to watch the students’ creativity to solve many of the hands-on activities,” said 8th-grade science teacher Mrs. Nelson.
“STEM night is important because it shows students of all ages how science, technology, engineering and math work in their everyday lives. It’s a great opportunity to combine learning with a social event, and it exposes our students and parents to things that they may not otherwise get to experience,” said Mrs. Richert, 4th-grade teacher.
More than 200 students and parents took part, and the process is building self-confidence. One student stated, “‘I am smart; I can do this.”
