OGDEN — Many St. Joseph Catholic High School students excel in and out of the classroom. Recently, two Jayhawks earned exemplary recognition, one for his athletic accomplishments, the other for his well-rounded student life.
Kai Kovar has been a lifer at St. Joseph Schools – he has attended the school since he was a kindergartner. Now a sophomore, he has been a competitive figure skater his entire life. His parents, Amanda and Karel Kovar, own and operate Wasatch Figure Skating Club, and have coached Kai during his career.
After years of dedication and hard work, Kai represented the United States in the Junior Nationals Figure Skating Competition, held Jan. 3-9 in Nashville, Tenn. He skated twice – a short program, which has mandatory elements; and a free skate, which has no required elements.
Following the short program, Kai was in second place. He returned the next day and won the free skate competition. His combined scores from both programs earned him the gold medal.
All of the students at SJCHS are encouraged to work with the on-campus College and Career Counseling Department. This program, led by Rose Ybaben, aids students in applying for scholarship dollars to help them achieve their dreams of attending college or their dream university. The process begins in a student’s freshman year, and is a highly personalized experience.
With the help of this program, senior Bjorn Mauritsen has been accepted into Notre Dame University. Bjorn is a 4.0 student, Student of the Month, basketball player and theater student. He is the epitome of a St. Joseph student, caring for others, always positive, and a true light to be around. He has committed to Notre Dame and will receive the Colonel Brice O’Brien Memorial Scholarship, a four-year scholarship awarded to St. Joseph students who attend Notre Dame.
