Saint Vincent School Bible tradition continues

SALT LAKE CITY — Saint Vincent de Paul 5th-graders were the focus of an old tradition during a Dec. 3 Mass. At the conclusion of the Mass, which was celebrated in St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, they participated in a ceremony in which each 5th-grader received a Bible blessed by Monsignor M. Francis Mannion, pastor emeritus of the parish. The 5th-graders were responsible for planning the Mass, participating in the readings, bringing up the gifts, and presenting the intentions in front of their parents and the school and parish community.

Saint Vincent de Paul 5th-graders have participated in this sacred Bible tradition since 1992. Each student receives a copy of the "Fireside Catholic Youth Bible New American Revised Edition." Each Bible inscribed with the student’s name to add a personal touch and make the students feel special. The Bible will be used during religion class and throughout their years at St. Vincent’s, and hopefully, into their high school years and beyond.

Terry Stack, 5th-grade teacher, chose this Bible version because she feels it uses words that students can identify with and it interprets the liturgy for the student to better appreciate and comprehend. In addition, it provides detailed maps to show where biblical events occurred.

"The Bible also has segments on virtues which will help students act appropriately when dealing with peer pressure, love, courage and culture," Mrs. Stack said. "These are virtues teens experience or will experience and it is beneficial to discuss and facilitate sharing thoughts and feelings during religion class."

Students look forward to being in 5th grade and participating in this tradition of the Bible ceremony. It is a "bridge" to help students study the Old and New testaments to better prepare themselves for middle school and make good choices in their future. Students are learning the importance of the Bible and how it can be used to teach important lessons to become better Christians. This fulfills St. Vincent’s mission to develop students to become active Christians in their everyday life.
