Sandra “Sandy” Joan Nichols, 82, passed away in her sleep on August 12, 2025, due to a rapid decline in her health that emerged several months ago.
Sandra built a lengthy career in the telecommunications industry that spanned approximately 40 years. She began as an operator for Pacific Northwest Bell, which later became AT&T, and held such management positions as running the entire office of operators and support staff while at the San Diego facility. Sandra, who retired from AT&T in her 50s, also worked at Convergys’ call center, where she retired in her 60s.
In addition to work, Sandra was also active at St. Thomas More Parish in Sandy. She taught religious education and helped with funerals and social outreach. Sandra was involved with the Philanthropic Educational Organization, a non-profit that supports women in obtaining their goals. Additionally, she was a member of the Red Hat Society, a women’s social group. Her interests and hobbies included the theater and cinema, as well as the Sundance Film Festival. She also enjoyed traveling, playing Bunco and attending her book club, given her avid interest in reading. Above all, Sandra’s main interest was her family and friends. They meant a great deal to her.
Sandra is survived by husband Doug Nichols; daughter Missy Corcoran and stepchildren Andy, Jeff and Pam Nichols; brothers Thomas and William Burford; and two grandchildren, four step-grandchildren and 13 step-great-grandchildren.
A wake will be on Friday, September 12, 2025 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East, Millcreek. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, September 13, 2025 at 11 a.m. at St Thomas More Catholic Church, 3015 E. Creek Road, Cottonwood Heights, with a reception immediately following the service.
The family would also like to thank the staff and nurses at Escalante at Coventry nursing home in Cottonwood Heights, who have provided great care to Sandra and Doug.
