The Intermountain Catholic asked the Diocese of Salt Lake City’s seminarians about their summer ministry. Their responses follow.
Jaime Zuazo, St. Mary of the Assumption Parish and St. Lawrence Mission
I had the privilege of spending my summer at St. Mary of the Assumption Parish in Park City and St. Lawrence Mission in Heber Valley. The beautiful parish of St. Mary’s and the cozy, welcoming mission of St. Lawrence have continued the faithful miners’ mission to bring “the world’s greatest treasure: the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ” since 1881. My mornings started with the beautiful scenic view of the mountains, the song of birds, and on my way to the parish from the rectory, the company of ground-dwelling rodents.
I had the privilege of learning from Fr. Christopher Gray, Fr. Paulraj Rayappa, and several visiting priests as they celebrated nuptial weddings, quinceñeras, baptisms, and reverently celebrated the Sunday eucharistic celebrations. I was chased by a group of summer Bible study kids with a bucket of water, ate pizza and watched movies in a North Pole atmosphere with them, as we learned how God dwells in our everyday life.
The St. Mary’s and St. Lawrence staff welcomed me and allowed me to learn from the great service they provide to the community in works of charity, liturgical celebrations, and service to the parishioners. This is what I did for my summer assignment. Thank you for a wonderful time, St. Mary’s and St. Lawrence.
