SALT LAKE CITY — Kevin Nebeker, a sophomore at Skyline High School and a member of St. Ann Parish, Salt Lake City, earned his third National Blackbelt League (NBL) World Title Dec. 28, 2006, in Buffalo, N.Y. NBL is the National Blackbelt League which sponsors world wide sport karate competitions. It is affiliated with the Sport Karate International League (SKIL) headquartered in Lakewood, N.Y. In 2004, Nebeker won his first NBL world title in Junior Choreographed Self-Defense, and defended his title in 2005 and 2006. This achievement earned him a place in the NBL record book. He also won three NBL Hall of Fame Awards: the Golden Gate Conference in 2003, Rocky Mountain in 2005, and Pacific in 2006, for being the best overall junior black belt competitor. Nebeker has earned three SKIL world titles, which is an amateur competition. He won the "SKIL Overall Junior Black Belt Point Champion" award in 2006, for earning the most combined points in kata (forms), weapons, self-defense, and point-sparring with competitors from around the world. Nebeker graduated with honors from Kearns-St. Ann School in 2005. He has earned two black belts in the martial arts. He earned a black belt in Tae Kwon Do in 2000, just 10 days before he turned 9 years old. He began studying the martial arts at the age of five. He studies under Hanshi Darren Cox, of All-Star Karate in Murray. Nebeker is now taking some time off of international competition to pursue other high school athletics.
