DRAPER — Juan Diego Catholic High School Boys Basketball head coach Drew Trost recently achieved a significant milestone: his 300th overall career win, which came about on Jan. 24 when the varsity basketball team claimed a 62-51 victory against Judge Memorial Catholic High School.
This achievement is one of many for Trost, a Utah native who has spent 17 years as a coach and educator. In 2018 he was named 4A Coach of the Year and 4A Region 11 Coach of the Year. In 2020, he was honored as Utah’s Best of State Coach.
Trost was the head basketball coach at Bishop Noll Institute, a Catholic high school in Hammond, Ind., for eight years before coming to JDCHS in 2013, when former coach Brandon Sluga stepped down.
“I was fortunate to become a head coach at a pretty young age in Indiana,” said Trost, who started at Bishop Noll at age 23. “They took a chance on me as a young kid.”
It took a couple of years to build the basketball program at Bishop Noll before it hit its stride, he said. In his last four years at Bishop Noll, his teams won 85 games. During that time, he was named Indiana High School Coach of the Year twice and the teams he coached achieved 129 wins.
At Juan Diego, Trost’s teams have won 171 games so far.
“I’ve been really privileged to coach some really incredible players who not only have great work ethics but also are talented players,” he said. “That makes all of us coaches look good, when you have good players.”
Trost, who also serves as the school’s assistant principal, grew up in the Holladay area and attended Intermountain Christian School. He then attended Calumet College of St. Joseph, where he played basketball. He later transferred to Valparaiso University, majoring in math and secondary education. He has a master’s degree in school administration from Indiana University.
“Milestones such as this are a testament to the program he has built, the staff who aid him in maintaining the high standards that have been set forth and the many talented athletes who he and his staff have had the privilege to coach,” Juan Diego Athletic Director Ted Bianco said of Trost’s achievement.
The coach said he has received tremendous support from JDCHS administration.
“Winning 300 games also isn’t possible without support,” he said. “I had great support from the Bishop Noll administration, and Dr. [Galey] Colosimo [the school principal] is awesome here at Juan Diego, and he really supports and gives us the resources, and really paves for us to build very successful programs.”
