Courtesy of St. Joseph Elementary School OGDEN — The stewardship success of Saint Joseph Catholic Elementary School in Ogden just gets bigger and bigger with each new year. With the 2012 Souper Bowl of Caring, St. Joseph surpassed last year’s 10,500 items and ended up collecting about 13,800 items. The Souper Bowl of Caring is a national program that helps guide elementary schools to combine the excitement of the "real" Super Bowl with doing something good for the community by collecting soup cans for local food pantries. According to the Souper Bowl of Caring national website: "Lord, even as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us be mindful of those who are without a bowl of soup to eat." To ignite enthusiasm and in the spirit of competition, contests are held between each class at St. Joseph school. The overall winner of this year’s Souper Bowl was Ms. Kenney’s 6B Seahawks, with 2,732 cans of soup collected. All classrooms exceeded their goal of at least 250 items and were rewarded with a Crazy Hair Day. The beneficiary of the can drive was Catholic Community Services in Ogden. They were so impressed with the efforts this year as it took several trips to load their trucks. Marci Valdez, CCS spokesperson, said that students collected 6,196 pounds of food – 773 more pounds than last year.
