Two St. Marguerite Catholic School students placed in this year’s Math Kangaroo competition, which took place on March 16. St. Marguerite’s is a test site for the competition, and has been participating in it for about 10 years. The Kangaroo challenge consists of problems in multiple-choice form that are not standard notebook problems and come from a variety of topics. Besides basic computational skills, the test requires perseverance, creativity and imagination, logical thinking and other problem-solving strategies. Students can prepare for this test by practicing all sort of math problems. Many of the questions are story problems requiring models. The questions help build logic and spatial reasoning. At the state level, first-grade student Cooper Eastburn placed second, and third place went to fourth-grader Addi Phillippi.
