Young astronomers, engineers, and scientists ranging in the fields of biological, earth science, medical/behavioral science, and environmental science, as well as mathematics present their projects to be judged and awarded at the 13th Annual Diocesan Science Fair at Saint Olaf School March 7.

BOUNTIFUL — The 13th Annual Diocesan Science Fair, sponsored by the Utah State Council of the Knights of Columbus was held at Saint Olaf School March 7.

The Knights of Columbus in furtherance of the mission of the Diocese of Salt Lake City and Catholic schools, assist by recognizing, encouraging, and rewarding Catholic school students and educators in their accomplishments in the field of science.

The 2009 School Appreciation award was changed this year and is now awarded to the host school. Saint Olaf School was awarded $300 and an appreciation trophy in recognition of Ed Schulfer, PSD, Science Fair co-founder. The host science teacher was Jim Haggart. Haggart was awarded $100 in recognition of Kimberly Beger, Science Fair co-founder.

The Young Scientist of the Year trophy and a $200 savings bond was awarded in memory of George Frkovich to Sierra Pond of J.E. Cosgriff Memorial School. This award was sponsored by Mother Teresa of Calcutta Council 12181.

The Space and Aeronautics trophy and a $200 savings bond in memory of Christopher Wall was awarded to Tony Bird of Saint John the Baptist Middle School.

The Astronomer of the Year Trophy and Telescope, sponsored by Thomas Sevcik, a member of the Saint Vincent de Paul Knights of Columbus Council 13297 was awarded to Paco Juarez of Saint Francis Xavier Regional School.

The special recognition awards were given for overall categories and best use of oral presentation. They each received a trophy and a $100 savings bond.
