SALT LAKE CITY — Sydney Richards (13) is well on her way to Judge Memorial Catholic High School.Although she’s still in the eighth grade at Our Lady of Lourdes Elementary School, she’s taking Advanced Algebra I and Honors Physical Science at Judge Memorial. These are just her favorite subjects. When you add basketball, soccer, reading, and riding her bike, it’s obvious that Sydney is a very busy young lady with a wide array of interests. At 5’8", it’s no wonder basketball is one of her favorite sports.

"In Honors Physical Science, we’re studying motion, atoms, and metals and their properties," she said in an April 30 interview with the Intermountain Catholic. "In Advanced Algebra I we’re studying square roots and equations."

Sydney will miss a week of school when her family takes a vacation trip to Hawaii, but She is planning to use the time to overcome her fear of the water.

"I’d like to be a marine biologist, but I’m really scared of water," she said. "Still, I look forward to scuba diving and snorkeling. I’m fascinated by the animals I’ll see under the water. I’m fascinated by all animals, really, and would like to work with them in some way when I get out of school."

The youngest daughter of Evan and Kathleen Richards, Sydney has two older sisters in college. She has to think hard to determine which of her school subjects she is least fond.

She loves history and geography, and thinks perhaps language arts may be her biggest challenge.

A student at Our Lady of Lourdes Elementary School since kindergarten, Sydney said she appreciates the racial diversity of the school most, and has enjoyed watching the school grow and change since her kindergarten years.

"I love the teachers here," she said. "But I’m also looking forward to going to Judge Memorial. It’s a bigger school, and I’m open to meeting new people and making new friends.
