SALT LAKE CITY — Catholic Schools Week is a time to celebrate our history and our present success, and recognize our preparations for the future. True to our history of continuous improvement, J.E. Cosgriff Memorial Catholic School welcomed our 2021-2022 students with system upgrades, which weren’t immediately visible but they have been very impactful.

During the 2020-21 school year it became apparent that our problem-solving, hard work and commitment on behalf of our mission was challenged by our existing technology infrastructure. As we identified the scope of the project, we turned to our community for help.

Again, as in the past, once needs were identified our community stepped up.  At our school’s largest fundraising event, Mardi Gras, a generous donation from Mark and Kathie Miller was matched by our families and supporters. The combined funds enabled us to commit to a major summer project.

Groove Entertainment and WinOne Communication removed and rebuilt our entire backbone physical layer connectivity. The work included upgrading from 1Gig Cat5E to OM3 Fiber supporting 10 Gigabit uplinks. Our new centralized wireless system allows management from a single location and the access points are all WiFi6 access points, which allows us to utilize and maximize our investment for years to come. Teacher traffic and student traffic are now separated on three separate virtual networks.

These and other improvements have changed daily life at Cosgriff. The previous year’s frustrating interruptions and derailment of instruction due to network/WiFi issues have become almost nonexistent. With the support of our tech team, Patrick Humlicek and Christian Ball, every student and teacher has what they need now for engaged, effective instruction and we have the foundation for technology needs of the future.

Lisa Romero is principal of J.E. Cosgriff Memorial Catholic School; Kassi Mancini is the school’s development director.
