SALT LAKE CITY — The annual Catholic Woman’s League fall benefit and fashion show, returning after a hiatus caused by the pandemic, will take place at a new venue this year. “Fall Tapestry” will be held on Oct. 22 at the Marriott University Park Hotel.
The CWL is asking for help gathering items for the baskets that are used for opportunity drawings. The wish list includes gift cards for Cinemark theaters and for tea at the Grand America, spring flower bulbs, gardening gloves, board games, children’s crafts, artwork, restaurant gift cards, baby items, and passes to local attractions such as Red Butte Gardens, Hogle Zoo and the Natural Museum of Art, among other items. No used items will be accepted. Monetary donations for the baskets also will be accepted. Donation deadline is Oct. 5.
Proceeds from the opportunity drawings will be donated to the beneficiaries of this year’s luncheon: The Literacy Action Center and The Sharing Place.
The Literacy Action Center helps English-speaking adults in Salt Lake and Davis counties who are functionally illiterate. Each year the program helps more than 200 individuals whose reading, writing, or math skills are below a fifth-grade level to become proficient in these areas.
The Sharing Place provides grief support to children ages 3 to 18 and their parents. Grief support groups meet twice a month at The Sharing Place in Millcreek, Sharing Place West in Taylorsville and Mount Jordan Middle School in Sandy.
The Catholic Woman’s League was organized in March 1916 by the Most Rev. Joseph S. Glass, the second Bishop of Salt Lake.
According to its mission statement, “Catholic Woman’s League is a non-profit woman’s organization, which works for the interest of Christ, promotes spirituality based on the principles of our Catholic faith, advances literary and educational interests, and assists in philanthropic efforts for the welfare of our community.”
The luncheon is not limited to members of the Catholic Woman’s League; everyone is welcome.
“This is the oldest Catholic woman’s organization in Utah,” CWL President Linda Burt said. “We really would appreciate the support from our fellow women of the Catholic faith and an opportunity to give them a taste of what we’re about.”
Tickets must be purchased in advance. Mail reservations with payment and seating requests by Oct. 12 to Jenny Maffuccio, 13297 N. Deer Canyon Drive, Kamas, Utah 84036.
Parking for the event is free.
